5 Tips To A Healthier 2015!

Happy New Year! Did you overindulge over the holidays. Is your new years resolution to eat better, exercise more, and get your health on track. If you did, your not alone. The gyms will be packed in January full of newly inspired resolution making members. While most people have good intentions, unfortunately come February most will lose interest and quit. So what’s the secret to eating healthier and feeling better? Small changes that can be maintained can have a huge impact on your overall health.

 1).  Set SMART goals:

Aim for SMART ( Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Realistic, and Timely) goals. For example, instead of cutting out sugar altogether, look at your source of sugar consumption and reduce them. Also, if you like fancy coffee drinks say no to the whip cream and/or ask for half sweet. Little changes go a long way, just be consistent and stay the course.

2). Start the day off right:

everyday granola

I am a huge breakfast fan. I get up before everyone else in our house so that I can enjoy my breakfast and fuel up for a busy morning.  Good morning breakfasts include steel cut oats, healthy granola with fresh fruit, homemade muffins, or fresh fruit and nuts.

 3). Meal Planning:

menu-planning-1

On the fly cooking can be stressful especially when you factor in kids and after school activities. Set 30 minutes aside each week to review your pantry and fridge. Create a grocery list and weekly meal plan. Meal planning will reduce stress and ensure you and your family are eating healthier, plus it will put more  money in your wallet. Who doesn’t need extra cash after the holidays?

 4).  Mindfulness:

When the majority of your diet consists of healthy, fresh and whole foods, you can indulge. However, the key to indulgence is mindfulness.  Chose indulgent food that you truly enjoy but be aware of portions sizes and hunger cues. Don’t eat just to eat.

5). Start moving  and keep moving:

snowshoeing

Healthy eating and activity go hand in hand. Find an activity that you enjoy and is convenient because you will be more likely to stick with it. For example, if you like running join a running clinic in your neighborhood. Physical activity can increase your metabolism, decrease stress, and feels pretty good.

I hope these 5 health tips help you achieve your health goals in 2015. Fill your plate with fresh and seasonal vegetables. Remember to put your fork down when you are full! Wishing you a healthy and happy New Year!
